T’s Smiles was founded by Tauheedah Muhammad-Robertson, a seasoned dental professional with over 25 years of experience in the field, who recognized the urgent need for equitable oral health care in underserved communities. The organization was born out of a deep commitment to social justice and a passion for reducing health disparities. Our core belief is that everyone deserves access to high-quality dental care, regardless of their socioeconomic status, geographic location, or cultural background.
Since our inception, we have focused on eliminating barriers to dental care by bringing services directly to those who need them through innovative mobile units and strategic local partnerships. Our approach is grounded in the principles of equity and cultural competence, ensuring that our services are not only accessible but also respectful and responsive to the diverse backgrounds of the populations we serve. By prioritizing the hiring of bilingual staff and community members, we aim to build trust and effectively address oral health disparities, making a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.
Problem Statement
Access to dental care remains a critical issue in underserved and underrepresented communities, particularly among low-income families, immigrants, and racial minorities in Grand Rapids, MI. These populations face numerous challenges in accessing dental care, including lack of insurance, high service costs, geographic isolation, and transportation barriers. According to the Kent County Health Department, nearly 30% of children in the county have untreated dental decay, with significantly higher rates among low-income and minority populations.
